Hanamikoji Street is located in Kyoto’s historic Gion district. It stretches about one kilometer from Sanjo-dori down to the Kenninji Temple area. A leisurely stroll along the entire street takes around 20 to 30 minutes, making it a perfect short walk full of charm.
A Brief History of Hanamikoji
Hanamikoji Street is located in Kyoto’s Higashiyama Ward and serves as the main street of the historic Gion district. Running north to south for about one kilometer, it connects Shijo Street to Kenninji Temple.
Its history dates back to the mid-Edo to early Meiji periods, when the nearby Yasaka Shrine attracted worshippers from all over Japan. As the shrine flourished, the surrounding area developed into a lively district filled with teahouses (ochaya), geisha residences (okiya), and performance venues. Hanamikoji became the central axis of the Gion Kobu entertainment quarter — one of Kyoto’s most renowned hanamachi (geisha districts). (Source: uncinq)
In 1949, the street underwent renovations, including a road expansion and the installation of stone pavement, gradually shaping it into the charming cobblestone path we see today.

The word “Hanami” in Hanamikoji doesn’t refer to cherry blossom or plum blossom viewing, as one might assume. Instead, “hana” (meaning “flower”) is a symbolic reference to geisha culture — representing the elegance and beauty of geisha themselves.
It’s a poetic expression that captures the refined atmosphere of the traditional entertainment world in Kyoto.

The northern section of Hanamikoji Street remains part of a designated historical preservation area, where the traditional cityscape is beautifully maintained. Lining both sides of the street are tea houses (ochaya), fine restaurants (ryōtei), and establishments frequented by geisha and maiko (apprentice geisha), many of which still retain the classic machiya townhouse architecture.
If you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of a geisha gracefully passing by.
📌 Friendly Reminder: Geisha are not tourist attractions. Please do not follow, approach, or secretly photograph them. Respect for their privacy and cultural role is part of being a responsible visitor in Kyoto.
