In the thousand-year-old city of Kyoto, there is an alley that feels like a journey through time — Hanamikoji Street. Along this path stands a traditional wooden building: the Gion Kagai Art Museum (祇園花街芸術資料館).

Inside, the museum holds over a century of Gion’s hanamachi (flower town) history. From a young girl beginning her path as a maiko, to becoming a calm and composed geiko, their growth and daily lives are carefully preserved here. In one visit, you can catch a glimpse of a geiko’s graceful fan dance, the vibrant seasonal hair ornaments worn by maiko, and the hand-printed “hana-meishi” name cards, shared only with a fortunate few.

The Hanamachi Arts Museum officially opened in May 2024. Inside, you’ll find a rare collection of artifacts and displays related to the world of geiko (geisha), offering a glimpse into the traditions and elegance that are usually hidden from everyday view.

藝妓或舞妓的京舞表演｜Kyoto-Style Dance Performance by Geiko or Maiko

京舞表演需提前購票。每場表演約15分鐘，可以近距離欣賞藝妓表演。購買套票還會附上一張當日表演藝妓的「花名刺」，滿滿的儀式感，是此趟京都之旅最有意義的紀念品。

Tickets must be purchased in advance to attend the Kyoto-style dance performance. Each show lasts about 15 minutes, offering a rare chance to admire a geiko’s graceful dance up close. If you purchase a ticket package, you’ll also receive a hanameishi — the artistic name card of the performing geiko on that day. It’s a meaningful keepsake and one of the most memorable souvenirs from your trip to Kyoto.

花名刺（はなめいし）是舞妓與藝妓專用的藝術名片，並非一般商業名片。它以和紙為紙材、版木手刷，尺寸約為商業名片的一半，僅印上藝名與所屬花街。圖案講究，常見季節花卉、生肖、和傘、鞠、玩具等元素，帶有濃厚的和風美感。這項工藝據說起源於明治時代畫師松村翠鳳，他根據舞妓氣質創作這種名片，並親手命名為「花名刺」。直到今日，花名刺仍由其後代繼續傳承，讓這項京都傳統文化得以延續。

Hanameishi （はなめいし）are artistic name cards used exclusively by maiko (apprentice geisha) and geiko (Kyoto-style geisha), distinct from ordinary business cards. These cards are traditionally made from washi (Japanese paper) and hand-printed using woodblocks. About half the size of a standard business card, they display only the geiko’s or maiko’s stage name and the hanamachi (geisha district) to which they belong.

Each design is carefully crafted, often featuring motifs like seasonal flowers, zodiac animals, wagasa (Japanese umbrellas), temari (decorative balls), and traditional toys—rich in Japanese aesthetic and symbolism.

It is said that this craft originated in the Meiji era, created by the artist Matsumura Suifō, who designed the cards to match the graceful essence of maiko and personally named them hanameishi. To this day, his descendants continue to carry on the tradition, preserving this unique aspect of Kyoto’s cultural heritage.

花街藝術博物館的藝妓合照需提前購票預約，不能夠隨意拍攝，以下為注意事項：

不可隨意拍攝路上的舞妓或藝妓
在花見小路等花街常會看到匆匆行走的舞妓，請：不要阻擋、偷拍、追拍，這些行為已經被當地列為不禮貌甚至會被制止。
尊重藝妓的專業與文化
合照時請勿觸碰對方，也盡量避免誇張的肢體動作或搞笑表情。藝妓的妝髮、儀態都是經過長年訓練，合影時保持優雅會讓照片更有紀念價值～

At the Hanamachi Arts Museum, commemorative photos with a geiko must be booked in advance. Casual photography is not allowed. Please review the following etiquette guidelines before attending:

🚫 Do Not Photograph Geiko or Maiko on the Streets

In areas like Hanamikoji Street, it’s common to see maiko walking quickly to their appointments. However, do not block their path, take photos without permission, or chase after them. These behaviors are considered disrespectful and are actively discouraged by the local community.

🙏 Respect the Professionalism and Culture of the Geiko

When taking a photo with a geiko, do not touch her, and avoid exaggerated poses or comedic gestures. Her appearance and posture represent years of training. A respectful and elegant photo will become a much more meaningful memory of your visit to Kyoto.

從京都車站出發搭乘86 City Bus在東山安井站下車，步行約4分鐘即可到達。
從京都車站出發一日遊路線，可以一路散步到花見小路。

Take Kyoto City Bus No. 86 from Kyoto Station and get off at Higashiyama Yasui stop. From there, it’s about a 4-minute walk to the museum.
If you’re planning a one-day walking tour from Kyoto Station, you can enjoy a leisurely stroll all the way to Hanamikoji Street, passing through scenic streets and traditional neighborhoods.
