History of Kiyomizu-dera
Founded in 778 CE, Kiyomizu-dera boasts a history of more than 1,200 years. Legend says the Nara monk Enchin (Kenshin) followed a prophetic dream to Kyoto’s Otowa Mountain, discovered the pure Otowa spring, and built a small hermitage to enshrine the Eleven-Faced Kannon—marking the temple’s humble beginning.
A few years later, in 798 CE, famed general Sakanoue no Tamuramaro and his wife funded the construction of a full-scale temple, naming it “Kiyomizu”—“pure water”—after the crystal-clear spring, turning the site into one of Kyoto’s most venerated holy places.
In 1994, Kiyomizu-dera was inscribed as part of the UNESCO “Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto,” cementing its status as a World Heritage Site cherished not only for its architecture but also for over a millennium of living faith and local devotion.

Highlights of Kiyomizu-dera
Kiyomizu Stage
The vast wooden veranda juts dramatically from the cliff—Kiyomizu-dera’s most iconic sight and the perfect perch for cherry blossoms in spring or fiery maples in autumn.
The present main hall and its cantilevered stage were rebuilt in 1633 under the patronage of Tokugawa Iemitsu, the third shogun. Using 139 massive cypress pillars and no nails, the stage is ingeniously suspended over the hillside.

Otowa Waterfall
Otowa Waterfall, located behind the main hall of Kiyomizu-dera, has been flowing for over a thousand years and is said to inspire the temple’s name—“Kiyomizu” literally means “pure water,” referring to this crystal-clear, ever-running spring.
The waterfall is split into three separate streams, each believed to bestow a different blessing:
- Academic success 🎓
- Good relationships and love 💕
- Health and longevity 💪
Visitors queue to catch the water with long-handled ladles, but tradition says you should drink from only one stream to purify your six senses; drinking from all three is thought to be greedy and may negate the blessing.
